Water off the roof and away from the house.
Gutters overflowing in a downpour, a downpipe that goes nowhere, or a low spot in the yard that fills up every winter. Storm water is usually a run problem, not a gutter problem.
Where the water actually goes
Plenty of houses have downpipes that discharge onto the ground or into a line that collapsed a long time ago. Following the run and finding where it stops is the first job, and it decides everything after it.
Replacing a run
New storm water goes in as PVC on a proper fall with inspection openings, so the line can be looked at later without another dig. Photos of the trench before it gets backfilled are worth keeping.
